The village name says it all: Aab-e-Khoshk, "dry water." For four generations, women and children walk two hours each way to a seasonal spring. In dry years they walk further. The geological survey was completed last winter — a sustainable water table sits 47 meters down. A solar-pumped well + 5,000-liter holding tank costs $3,000 to install and roughly $40/year to maintain. Aab-e-Khoshk Community Council has committed to long-term maintenance funded by a small per-household contribution after year one. We are 95% to goal. Two more weeks of donations and we sign the contract.

    Contractor signed. Drilling starts Monday.

Bamyan Hydraulics signed the contract this morning. Drilling rig arrives Sunday night, work starts Monday. Estimated three days to depth, two more days to pump installation and tank assembly. Aab-e-Khoshk's women won't walk to the spring much longer.
